Technology for Independent Living

TIL has a very specific niche. We have developed services in two main areas to help people with severe disabilities live independently:

  • Augmentative Communication Systems (ACS). ACSs are a range of devices which enable people who cannot speak or write to communicate with others. Sometimes these devices are called "Communication Aids."
  • Environmental Control Systems (ECS). ECSs allow people with severe physical disabilities to control devices in their homes: telephones, light switches and electrical outlets, heating and security systems, door entry and access, and entertainment systems. Through specially designed switches that may be sensitive to touch or breath , the individual can access this equipment and greatly reduce the need for certain types of assistance.

Consultation on and Installation of New Equipment

Our Biomedical Engineering technologists work with each person individually to help determine their electronic access needs and which mix of ECS device will best suit their environmental needs. The equipment is installed in the individual's home or extended care facility. All equipment is on long-term loan to individuals for as long as they need it.

Most of the equipment used is very high maintenance, due to the technology itself and the way individuals use it. People with limited mobility will hit switches with force: sip and puff switches become moist and need frequent cleaning to remain functional. Care-workers are also trained on equipment care whenever possible. However, the high turnover of staff often means that equipment is not maintained properly and needs frequent servicing by our engineering staff.

Consultation with other agencies

TIL acts as one part of the rehabilitation team for a person learning to live with a severe disability. The program works with GF Strong Rehabililitation Centre, community health centres and similar agencies throughout the province, as well as members of the client's care team, to provide for these specialized needs.

Our Funders

TIL is a program of the BC Association for Individualized Technology and Supports for People with Disabilities (BCITS). BCITS acknowledges the financial assistance of the Province of British Columbia. TIL is funded by the Ministry of Health and Direct Access to Gaming. We are grateful for their generous support.

CAYA

Communication Assistance for Young Adults (CAYA) is a project created through Special Education Technology BC (SET-BC) to serve adults between the ages of 19-27 who require alternative or augmentative communication (AAC) assistance. The project is designed to address the crucial transition period to adulthood for young people with severe communication disabilities. The goal of CAYA is to ensure that eligible individuals have access to the communication tools and professional support to enable them to create an adult life to the best of their abilities.
