TIL provides Environmental Control Systems (ECS) that allow people with severe physical disabilities to control devices in their homes, such as: telephones, light switches and electrical outlets, heating and security systems, door entry and access, and entertainment systems. We also have portable devices for people on the move.
Through specially designed switches, that may be sensitive to touch or breath, the individual can access this equipment and greatly reduce the need for certain types of assistance.
We accept applications from anyone who requires service. However, we do have some guidelines to help you decide if you can benefit from our services. For example, if you have a physical disability, it may be impossible for you to “change channels on your TV with your remote control." But, we can help by providing you with a device that changes channels for you in a different way. The device could also be set up to help you dial the telephone or turn on your lights.
In most cases, if you can push buttons on a standard remote control, you may not need our services. We can help you decide.
Our Biomedical Technologists are great problem solvers. We work you individually to help determine your electronic access needs and which ECS devices best suit your environmental needs. The equipment is installed in the your home or extended care facility. All equipment is on long-term for as long as you need it.
Most of the equipment we use is very high maintenance, due to the technology itself and the way individuals and caregivers use it. We provide all needed equipment servicing, repair and replacement.
TIL acts as one part of the rehabilitation team for a person learning to live with a severe disability. We work with GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre, community health centres and similar agencies throughout the province, as well as members of the client's care team, to provide for these specialized needs.
BCITS is a network partner in the BC Personal Supports Network. Our first project is EATI–the Equipment and Assistive Technology Initiative. If you're a person with a disability who has employment-related goals (or volunteer goals leading to employment), you may be eligible to receiving funding for assistive technology.
Visit the BCPSN website to learn more about how EATI can help.
We're especially proud of the BCITS Peer Support Group . They are a diverse group of PROP and TIL clients who know what it’s like to live with ventilators, make the move out of an institution into the community, and simply to live with a disability.
